La Belle Dame Sans Merci
By John Keats

La Belle Dame Sans Merci is a ballad written by the writer of Romantic age, John Keats. This poem deals with the misery of a knight,a soldier. The title is in French language. The translation of the title in English is "A beautiful lady without mercy".It is a story of a knight. How he was treated by a beautiful lady like a fairy's child and abandoned by her on a hillside.
The poem is divided in twelve stanzas, the soldier is questioned by a stranger why he is loitering alone on the cold hillside. The stranger further, in second stanza observes the pathetic condition of a knight. Even the atmosphere is beautiful. As it is mentioned here, the harvest is done and squirrel is also having its food. But the knight is suffering that we can read on his face. In between the poem starts with 'I' as the knight himself explains his pathos. He talks about his fever and says he is looking extremely pale. He says that he met a lady in the meadow and the lady was like fairy's child. And how he was attracted towards his outer appearance. Further he explains that he made a garland, bracelets for her at the same time she was looking at him with love. He made her to sit on steed and he was listening what she was singing. Then she gave him food to eat. She was saying in a strange language something it was 'I love you'. The knight was not understanding that strange language but he imagines this can be three charming words 'I love you'.
Then, she brought him to a grot where she wept and he shut her wild eyes and kissed her. A lady then made him sleep by singing a lullaby. During his sleep he dreamt, he was on cold hillside and saw pale kings and princes, pale warriors. They were dead and they all were crying "la belle dame sans merci".They were extremely in bad condition. May be they were abandoned by this lady. They were like warning him.he was awake and thinks of this bad dream. And says that's why he is loitering palely here.
Keats here saying, if you want to be love or to love and want a pleasure then you have to hug sorrow. The love can not come without pain. There is a pain in love.
